FAQ's
Q. My amp isn't working. My friend Rollo says it needs a new power transformer.
Short Answer: OK....
Long Answer: Power Transformers do go bad, but very infrequently. In fact, In all my years of servicing tube equipment I've only had to replace a handful of them. Power transformers are relatively simple devices. They're iron-core inductors that "transform" alternating current voltages from a lower potential to a higher potential or visa-versa. You have a primary and a secondary and depending how many turns of fine copper wire there is in the primary with respect to the secondary (turns ratio) will determine how much you will step-up or step-down the the output voltages that supply the rest of the amplifier. Typically a guitar amp PT will both step-up and step-down voltages in it's secondary windings. You'll have a high-voltage tap for your tube plates, a 6.3 volt tap for your tube filaments, and if the amp has a tube rectifier; a 5 volt tap. In cases of a dead transformer, you just wont have any voltages inside the amp. The pilot light will be on, but the amp will be dead. In the case of a grossly shorted PT, it will massively overheat and may smoke, ooze tar, and blow fuses. However, a transformer that has only a few turns of shorted wire will still function somewhat but will be very warm to the touch and may not be delivering the required voltages to the rest of the amp.

To tell if your PT is bad or going bad, take all the tubes out of the amp. The idea is to limit current drain. Get a 40 watt light bulb and put one leg in series with the hot line (narrow blade) of the amplifier power cord, the other leg to the 120vac wall outlet. The neutral line (wide blade) goes directly to the 120vac wall outlet. Make sure you've got your connections right. Turn the amp on. A good power tranny will cause the light bulb to barely glow. If the light bulb glows brightly, suspect a bad transformer .

This Rock Ride is a wonderful sounding cymbal, but certainly heavy. If you want that
BIG ping sound with a bell that will CUT your face in half, this is the cymbal for you.
Strangely enough, I still wouldn't classify this one as a "manhole cover" since I think
of those as the clangy and toneless plates that you find with the "rock" model name
on them today. The ping is clear and clean, and more belltone than clang. I think it's
a great cymbal, and one of the best for this kind of sound.
