BOWL BACK TATER BUG MANDOLIN 1910 UNBRANDED 2 WOOD BODY HAND PAINTED ROSE DECOR This mandolin is in overall very good condition. This was acquired through a descendant of the owner, a German immigrant who purchased it in 1920 in New York City. That is the provenance available. Body appears to be rosewood and maple while top believed to be spruce.
Fret board appears to be rosewood.Beautiful hand painted rose applique with inlaid 2 wood oval around body opening. There are 3 white inlays in the fret board. I am uncertain what these are made from. They appear to be crudely installed an look somewhat like plastic. They may have been a later alteration. It is uncertain. The hardware on the back neck head appear to be a later modification. One of the key heads has been hand carved to match the others. There are a few issues that appear to be related to age and drying. These are highlight in the last 3 photos. The first 2 illustrate small areas where the top is separately from the body about 1 inch or so on either side where the head meets the neck. The last photo show a crack in the top. These are not major issues and can be repaired simply. There is ridging where the wood sections meets as occurs also in hard wood floors expose to humidity and temperature changes but overall it sill has a great finish. The piece was oiled with Old English wood oil when originally acquired but that has been a number of years. Overall this is still a great early 20th century mandolin and should be ready to play with some new strings.
